Develop the skills you need to manage the day-to-day operations of the System i server. Learn how the System i server works from an end user point of view, at both a basic and intermediate level, so you can assist your users and manage system operations. Practice the skills you learn in hands-on lab exercises. Materials used in this course are based on IBM i 6.1. This course applies to System i IBM i, however the majority of the material is also appropriate for i5/OS and OS/400 operating systems.

This course is for individuals new to the System i and responsible for daily system operations.
After completing this course, the student should be able to:
  • Control system operation using System i Navigator Graphical User Interface (GUI), System i Access for Web, and 5250 emulation, also called green-screen interfaces
  • Send and receive messages
  • Find and use Control Language (CL) commands
  • Use the online help and reference materials
  • Monitor and control jobs, job queues, output queues, and devices
  • Save and restore objects and libraries
  • Saving to Virtual Tape
  • Start and stop the system
  • Perform problem determination and reporting
  • Describe Program Temporary Fixes (PTF) management
  • Create and maintain user profiles, group profiles, and authorization lists
  • Describe system security
  • Describe how Management Central is used to manage multiple System i servers

    Required skills
